Biophysical properties of Mycobacteriophages

P. A. Somogyi, G. V. Petrovsky and V. B. Grigorev

Microbiological Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences 1529 Budapest, Pihenö ut 1 Hungary and the Ivanovsky Institute of Virology U.S.S.R. Academy of Medical Sciences, Moscow, U.S.S.R.

Biophysical characterization of two mycobacteriophages (Phlei phage and Butyricum phage) was carried out. Biophysical parameters obtained were: (i) buoyant densities in CsCl of 1.51 g/ml for both phages; (ii) sedimentation coefficient of 490 S and 410S; (iii) DNA content of 42 and 34% and (iv) mol. wt. calculated by electron microscopic dimensions to be 123 x 106 and 116 x 106 for Butyricum and Phlei phage, respectively.

Received 30 April 1975; accepted 22 July 1975.
