About the Cover

Cover Figure

Front cover illustration

Front and rear views (top and bottom, respectively) of the two membrane-proximal short consensus repeat domains of human decay accelerating factor (DAF; CD55), a receptor for many enteroviruses. The natural variation between primate DAF proteins has allowed the binding sites for echovirus (EV) type 7, 12 and 29 to be predicted. The left panel shows residues (in dark blue) that differ between African Green monkey and baboon DAF implicated in EV7 and EV29 binding, together with the binding site for a monoclonal antibody (red) known to block virus binding. The panel on the right shows residues in dark blue that vary in all primate DAF proteins bound by EV12. The highly conserved front face of the protein (top right) is the binding site for EV12. See the article by D. T. Williams and others on pages 731-738 of this issue.
