Front cover illustration
Confocal image of a BHK-38 tissue-culture cell infected with foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). The cell was fixed 2.0 h post-infection and labelled for FMDV proteins and the cellular microtubule network. Microtubules were labelled with a mouse anti-a-tubulin antibody and FMDV proteins were labelled with a rabbit antiserum. Primary antibodies were detected with Alexa 568 (red; microtubules) and Alexa 488 (green; FMDV proteins)-conjugated secondary antibodies. The nucleus was labelled with DAPI. The FMDV proteins occupy a defined region of the cytoplasm that has been termed the replication site. Photograph courtesy Paul Monaghan and Hannah Cook, IAH, Pirbright. See the article by Monaghan et al. in the April issue, pp. 933-946.
