Front cover illustration

BHK-38 tissue culture cells were infected with foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) and fixed at 3 h post-infection. The microtubules in the cells were labelled in red, the nuclei in blue and a series of sections were recorded in a confocal microscope. The cell at the bottom of the image shows the normal cell morphology, whilst the rounded cells show the typical cytopathic effect of FMDV infection. The width of the image is approximately 20 µm.
